Archaeology: Solve the Riddles of Ancient Civilizations
A real excavation is slower and quieter than anything in the films. People kneel in a trench for weeks with a trowel, a soft brush and a notebook, measure every layer of soil, and sometimes an entire season ends with a few fragments of pottery. Archaeology crosswords follow that work: famous sites such as Pompeii and Troy, terms like cultural layer, artefact and radiocarbon dating, and the scientists whose discoveries made historians rewrite their books. Some clues need only general knowledge, others ask about details of particular digs, so there is something for school students in ancient history lessons and for adults who watch documentaries about lost cities. Answers are checked as you go and hints help when a name escapes you. Free, in the browser, no registration.
