How to play Minesweeper

Goal of the game

Reveal every cell that does not hide a mine. Mines stay in place, you never need to find them, just avoid stepping on one.

Number clues

A number on a revealed cell shows how many mines sit among its 8 neighbors. A blank cell means none of its neighbors hide a mine.

Flags

Right-click places a flag on a cell you believe hides a mine. A flagged cell is protected from being accidentally revealed.

First click is always safe

A mine can never be under your first revealed cell or its neighbors, the field is generated only after that first move.

Chord click

Clicking an already-revealed number that already has exactly as many flagged neighbors as its number shows opens all remaining hidden neighbors at once.

Zero cascades

Revealing a cell with no adjacent mines automatically opens the entire connected empty region around it, up to the first numbered cell.

About Minesweeper

Minesweeper is a game where logic matters more than luck. The goal is simple: open every square on the board that does not hide a mine, without triggering a single one. The mines never move and there is no need to hunt for them specifically, you just need to work around them. Every opened square with a number shows how many mines are hiding among its eight neighbors, while a blank square with no number means there are no mines nearby at all and the area can safely be expanded. The first click is always safe: the board is generated only after the first move, so a mine can never end up under the clicked square or any of its neighbors. Right clicking places a flag on a square where a mine is suspected, protecting it from being opened by accident. When a revealed number has exactly as many flags around it as the number shows, clicking that number instantly opens all its remaining neighboring squares, which speeds the game up considerably in the later stages.
